Under the Veil I Rule
Chapter 202

A week's worth of caregiving, and Finnian had paid her this much? Without wasting a moment, she grabbed the card and headed back to the hospital room.

Liliana had already left, and Finnian, noticing Amara's return, darkened slightly his face, looking disgruntled. "Where have you been? You took forever."

Amara chose not to dig into the source of his irritation. Perhaps he was just displeased at being left alone by his caregiver.

"I went to the bank, Mr. Everly," she explained. "Why did you give me so much money?"

Bank visit, huh? Checking up on her paycheck? What a little moneygrubber. Finnian's annoyance somehow faded.

"One million dollars is for your work as a caregiver," he replied with a slight smirk. "The other three million is your divorce settlement."

Amara had previously turned down the divorce settlement, returning the three million to him, but Finnian didn't want to accept it, determined to give it back.

"I don't need that money," Amara insisted promptly. "Please, Mr. Everly, take it." "It's yours, so keep it," Finnian interrupted. "You deserve it."

His tone was firm and unyielding, leaving Amara momentarily speechless.

She had made up her mind not to take Finnian's money, and she wasn't about to change her stance now. However, continuing this back and forth seemed pointless and might lead to altercation, especially when they clearly had different views. Better to let it go for now and replace a way to return the money later. Hence, she chose to be reticent.

The following morning, Amara

watched the nurse change Finnian's bandages and then busied herself fetching him water. By the time she finished, it was already 10 AM, and she finally had a moment to check her phone. She noticed a text from

Keith sent twenty minutes ago. [Are

you at the hospital with Finnian?]

Perhaps growing impatient with her lack of response, Keith had sent another message ten minutes later. [I'm coming to see you.]

Amara's heart lurched. Keith and Finnian never saw eye to eye; their last meeting had ended in a scuffle Keith would definitely disapprove of her caring for Finnian, and it would likely lead to another confrontation. She had to prevent him from coming over.

She quickly stepped into the hallway to call Keith, but after two attempts with no answer, she wondered what he was up to.

Returning to the room, lost in thought, she closed the door behind her. Finnian noticed her worried expression and asked, "What's wrong? You seem upset."

"Nothing," Amara replied, shaking her head.

She checked the time. It had been twelve minutes since Keith's message, yet he still wasn't answering her calls. What was he doing?

Thinking quickly, she texted Keith, [Please don't come. I'm fine here, Finnian isn't making me do much, and he's paying me. I'm just reading and waiting for him to be discharged so we can finalize the divorce. No need to worry about me.]

She sent the message, but Keith didn't reply. Amara glanced out the window.

It was morning, and Keith was likely busy. Even if he wanted to come, he might

not have the time. Perhaps his message was just an offhand comment.

Convincing herself of this, Amara managed to calm down. But just as her nerves settled, a loud knock echoed through the room.
