Under the Veil I Rule -
Chapter 29
He grunted, lighting a cigarette with one hand, took a drag, and said, "Didn't expect your wife to be so good at hiding things."
There was a brief pause on the other end, and the voice that came through was noticeably colder. "Neither did I."
"So, what are you planning to do?" Dorian asked, "Confront her?"
"Yeah."
Hearing this, Dorian felt a wave of relief. Finnian had always been way too considerate of his grandparents, so much so that, despite being a skeptic, he had agreed to that ridiculous idea of a marriage of convenience three years ago.
He had always worried that Finnian wouldn't have the heart to divorce Amara because of his elders. Now, seeing Finnian so clear-headed about the situation eased Dorian's concerns.
On the other side, Finnian replayed the recording over and over, his brows furrowing deeper with each listen.
He leaned against the window, staring out at the clear blue sky, though his mood was anything but bright. It felt like he was spiraling into a dark vortex, suffocating and heavy.
After a long while, he dialed Amara's number, but just before the call went through, he abruptly hung up. Elsewhere, after shooing Liliana out of the break room, that familiar wave of nausea hit Amara again. She had already emptied her stomach earlier, and now with nothing left, she could only dry heave over the toilet for a bit.
When she finally straightened up, ready to leave the bathroom, a sudden thought struck her like a bolt. It was already the 19th of the month, and her period was late by quite some time.
She had been feeling off lately, mostly with bouts of nausea, and her appetite had grown significantly.
Over a month ago, she and Finnian had been intimate at the family home, but they hadn't used protection, and she'd forgotten to take the pill afterward.
All signs pointed to a consequence she wasn't ready to face, and as Amara stood at the bathroom doorway, a chill ran through her, unwilling to accept the reality.
After a long while, she dialed Elysia's number, hoping her friend would accompany her to the hospital, but with no answer, Amara had to go alone.
An hour later, Amara left the hospital, her face ashen.
Standing at the side of the road, she clutched a thin pregnancy test result, her heart a whirlwind of confusion and fear.
Her fingers instinctively brushed over her stomach; she couldn't believe she was pregnant, but there was no denying it now.
She didn't know if she should keep the baby, or even what her next steps should be. Just then, Elysia texted her, [Ama, sorry I missed your call. I was out on a date with Dorian, and Jessica showed up to cause trouble. We got into a fight.]
Shocked, Amara quickly replied, [What happened? Are you hurt? Where are you now?]
[I'm home now, still arguing with Dorian. I'm fine.]
[By the way, was there something you needed to talk about?]
Judging by Elysia's tone, she was still upset, but it didn't seem too serious. Still, considering Elysia and Dorian's complicated history, Amara felt uneasy and typed, [Are you home? Should I come over?]
[Sure.]
Amara took a cab to Elysia's place. Having the entry code, she let herself into the apartment.
She walked into the stylish, minimalist living room and saw Elysia sitting on a single-seater, her expression cold. On the double-seater couch were two men Dorian and Finnian, which made Amara stop short.
