Who Is My Husband -
Scene 24
Kailee remembered seeing his face the last time they were in the village. But his name was escaping her at this moment.
“It’s Ty.” He said, answering her unasked question.
Kailee nodded her head and smiled. He was the guy at the burning building last time. “Thank you very much. I didn’t realize that he was actually trying to kill me by burning my insides to death.”
“Hey now.” Grum said.
Kailee turned and looked at him. “And what is wrong with you eating something that spicy like it is nothing. My mouth is still on fire.” She pouted and folded her arms over her chest. “You know that just might have ruined my appetite for the rest of the day.”
“Kailee!”
She turned her head to see Reggie running up to her. He looked at Grum and then to Ty before settling back on her. “You ditched me.”
Kailee smiled. “You didn’t tell me that Grum is actually the sinister one out of you guys.”
Reggie slapped his forehead. “You didn’t give her one of those spicy meat sticks, did you?”
“I didn’t realize they were that spicy.” Grum said innocently.
Reggie turned and looked at Kailee. He could see the tears in her eyes and her flushed face. “Is your mouth still burning?” He said with a frown.
“I don’t think I have a mouth anymore. My lips are on fire too.” Kailee frowned as she reached up to them. A hand shot out quickly and grabbed her arm. She turned to look at Ty.
He released her hand promptly. “Don’t touch it. It will spread. Have them get you some milk to drink. That will help the most.”
Kailee went to say something to him when someone else shouted his name. “TY!”
They all turned their heads to see another familiar face running towards them. Kailee remembered it was the man she had seen when they were on their way to the village. And she believed his name was Phill. All these men had brown hair and green eyes. It must be contagious in this area. Kailee inwardly laughed at her inner joke.
“What is it?” Ty asked.
“He is looking for us. We need to finish the walkway within the hour.” Phill said hurriedly.
Kailee could see the fear in Phill’s eyes. She was about to ask who, but she didn’t need to. The next moment her question was answered.
“I am tired of you lazy men not doing your work but expecting to get paid for it. I want my walkway done now.”
Kailee looked up to see her uncle stomping over to the two men. His eyes then directly set on Kailee. Reggie immediately wrapped his arm around her shoulder, and he glared at the man to continue.
Her uncle gave a fake smile to Reggie and then nodded his head to Kailee. “My lady.” His voice caught over the word lady and then he straightened up to look at her. His eyes then raised to Reggie. “And my Lord I presume?”
Reggie looked at him and shrugged. “Like I mentioned to you before. It doesn’t matter who I am, does it?”
“You haven’t stopped by to visit since you left.” Fredrick said poisonously as he smiled at Kailee.
Kailee scoffed. “I never visited while I lived there.” She was either outside or in the attic. She was never allowed anywhere else. She had no one to visit there.
“You won’t come to see your aging uncle?” Fredrick said with fake sadness.
Kailee glared back at her uncle angrily. She could feel her bracelet starting to burn on her wrist. Her powers were acting up again but luckily the metal cuff was stopping it from getting out of control. Instead, it all concentrated in her stomach. A wave of nausea hit her and she raised her hand to cover her mouth. Her stomach heaved slightly and her eyes watered.
Fredrick looked at Kailee with disgust. “Geez, you didn’t go and get yourself pregnant already, did you?”
All eyes snapped onto Kailee with concern except for her uncle who looked to be angry. She couldn’t respond because a scent faintly tickled her nose. While her powers had surged, she had gotten the faintest scent of cedar and honey. But she couldn’t tell where it had come from or how close it was. She straightened herself up and looked into her uncle’s eyes. “My life is not your concern. I think in the future it would be best to act as strangers since that is what we are.”
“You are my niece.” Fredrick growled out.
“WAS. I quit being your niece when my aunt died. You are no one to me.” Kailee spat out angrily as the nausea crept up again.
Reggie rubbed Kailee’s arm. “Calm down. I don’t want you getting upset.” He raised his green eyes to Fredrick. “I won’t have you upsetting her. I’d be careful if I were you.”
“Very careful.” Grum said lowly in a deep growling tone.
“She shouldn’t be out and about like this in her condition anyways.” Fredrick sneered and then turned. “I’ll be seeing you later, Kailee.” He then looked at Ty and Phill. “WHAT ARE YOU STILL STANDING HERE FOR? GET GOING!” He shouted angrily.
Kailee watched as Phill, and Ty looked at Kailee with hesitation before they slowly complied.
“Maybe we should get you back.” Grum said as he bent down to look at Kailee.
“What? Nonsense. I don’t want to go back.” Kailee felt herself relaxing as her uncle left and the nausea also subsided.
“Yea, but what he said… is it true?” Reggie asked in a low whisper.
Kailee looked up at him and then laughed. “No. It was because of my other stuff.” She lifted up her metal cuffs and shook her wrist slightly.
Both men looked immediately relieved. They sighed visibly and their shoulders relaxed.
“Wow I didn’t realize how tense something like that would make you.” Kailee giggled and the two men gave her a awkward smile.
“Trey would definitely slit our throats if we had you out here and you were with child.” Reggie chuckled and rubbed his neck.
“Well it would have been an accident, it wasn’t like you would have known.” Kailee smiled; these men could act so cute at times.
“If there was any chance you were carrying his successor though we would have to get you back home. So, you are quite sure?” Reggie asked again hesitantly.
“Yes, I am sure. Besides, don’t you think it would be early for that anyways?” Kailee watched as Reggie shrugged.
“For a regular human, sure. But that isn’t the case here.” Grum said quietly.
“Oh… well I am certain that isn’t it. It stopped as soon as he left. So, everything is fine.” Kailee said with a small giggle.
“In that case. I need to go and do something real quick.” Reggie said as he guided Kailee into Grum.
“You need to go and inform Trey it is okay to breathe from wherever he was eavesdropping from?” Kailee smirked as she saw Reggie look at her quickly.
“What makes you think Trey was near?”
Kailee couldn’t say because she smelled him. So, she only shrugged. “Just a guess.”
“No more spicy foods, Grum. I’ll be back shortly.” Reggie said and quickly jogged off.
Kailee turned and looked up at Grum. “Okay I am picking the next snack. And no matter what I pick you have to eat it.”
Grum laughed quietly. “You think you can pick out something I won’t like? Go ahead and try.”
Kailee grinned as Grum swallowed hard as he ate the fried okra. She had paid attention to him during their meals and always noticed he slacked on his vegetables. She could see his face twist as he quickly swallowed the rest of it.
“Well played.” Grum said as he began to chug his drink.
Kailee giggled up at him and then felt a warm gentle arm slide around her shoulders. She tilted her head to the side to see Lance. He looked at Grum and laughed. “Why are you eating that? You hate okra.”
“Because he had me try one of his spicy meats and almost killed me.” Kailee said matter-of-factly.
Lance looked at Kailee mortified. “Oh my. Are you okay? That stuff can burn a hole through stone.”
“I managed to survive luckily.” Kailee giggled.
“Hey, that’s my spot.” Reggie said as he pointed to Lance’s arm around Kailee.
“Who says?” Lance tightened his fingers around Kailee and grinned.
“Says you. You already have a wife who probably wouldn’t appreciate you being that close to another.” Reggie said answering triumphantly.
“I bet Trey would rather have her close to me because I have a wife.”
“Hey what is that?” Kailee pointed in the distance. A large tub was being filled up with water and they were attaching a folding wooden seat at the top.
“That is a dunking tub. You know where you throw an item and hit the target. Then whoever is sitting on the seat gets dunked into the water.” Reggie answered as he watched Kailee staring at it with interest. “You haven’t seen one before?”
“If I did then it would have been when I was young, and I don’t remember.” Kailee said in a whisper.
“Come on Kailee. They have some apple dumplings made at the other end of town and they smelled amazing.” Lance said and tugged her gently next to him. He noticed Kailee had a thing for sweet treats just like he did. He saw her eyes light up and a wide grin flash over her face.
The four of them happily ate their apple dumplings together. A comforting silence fell between them as they enjoyed their dessert. Kailee felt relaxed, safe, and happy. These men were her family and she loved having them around. Even though at times they were overbearing and annoying. The only one missing was Trey then everything would have been complete.
Kailee suddenly dropped her food. Her face paled and her hand trembled. The moment the thought of Trey appeared a strange feeling hit her. She bit her bottom l*p as the sensation beat against her again.
“Kailee, what is wrong?” Lance asked as he knelt down in front of her.
She looked at him and then with the other set of green eyes. She tried to study each man carefully. But she couldn’t shake the urge that was coming forward. She felt like she needed to get to Trey. Like something was wrong. But how? She didn’t know where he was or what he looked like. But Reggie had gone to him earlier. Her eyes landed on him.
“I think… I think someone should check on Trey. I think something is wrong.” The moment she said it Reggie and Grum blurred away. Seriously, it was like a blur. They had moved so fast. Lance reached out and grabbed onto Kailee’s hand and held it gently. “I’m weird huh? It is probably nothing. But…”
“No, it is not weird. That is actually fairly normal for us. We can usually tell when our person is going through something.” Lance said with a small frown as he tried to explain.
“But I am not one of you, am I?” Kailee asked and he shook his head no.
