Even Dante himself was impressed by his action. The growl in his throat was not a simple warning. No, it wasn’t the fact that he was touching him, there was something else that at the moment he didn’t know about and it bothered him to the point of gritting his teeth.

The chestnut wolf dropped his hands and stood up cautiously, he didn’t like the intense silver gaze of the alpha that seemed to want to move at any moment and rip his throat in two.

He smiled slyly and turned his attention to the wolf once he knew he would not be attacked.

-My queen, come, everyone will be very happy to see you,” he was about to take him by the arm, but stopped in mid-air. Dante’s hand had rested on Lukyan’s h*p and was again warning him with his eyes to keep his distance.

The omega for his part felt the atmosphere tense and the reason was him. She liked to keep a low profile and having two wolves arguing over her person in the middle made her uncomfortable and in a bad way.

-Ryan,” she used a serious and authoritative tone. If they weren’t going to behave like civilised wolves, someone had to do it,” she said.

He nodded without complaint and started walking, separating himself from them.

-Alpha, he’s my former beta, could you not be so rough,” he asked quietly.

That a wolf was defending another wolf in front of his person was something new in his life, but that wasn’t the point.

-There’s something about him that I don’t like,” he stressed just the same.

Lukyan sighed and was aware of the hand on his h*p holding him possessively.

-You could let go,” he said in an even lower tone.

Having him so close didn’t seem right now that he was going to pay a visit to his other family, after all he was still married and even if Sylas had done the unimaginable to her, he was still her husband and they had laws he had to abide by. Though few knew of his longing for the relationship between them to be broken, he hoped to dissolve it in time.

-No,” the alpha answered in her ear. And she could have sworn she felt him growl at her refusal.

-That I took you out of the mansion without Edgar’s medical permission puts you under my responsibility, and besides, I want to touch you,” he commented authoritatively.

-You don’t have to stay with me at all times, I appreciate that, but you know the laws, do you think I didn’t notice your pack’s comments,” he kept a calm profile, though the slight sweat on his brow gave him away. That wolf laid his hands on his body whenever he had the chance and the contact was something he was still dealing with.

-That will be settled soon enough,” his breath in her ear shuddered, “after all, you are mine now,” he said confidently.

Lukyan froze and whirled towards him, releasing his hand from her h*p with a disguised slap, she didn’t want Ryan or anyone else to see their supposed fight, it wouldn’t help her family.

-I don’t belong to anyone,” he whispered flatly.

Dante stared at him for a moment and the muscles in his face tensed. He was standing up to him, no one had ever done that before, least of all a wolf. He clenched his fist until it hurt, holding back his alpha male instinct to break him down right there and show him who was boss.

-Omega.” His words also came out more gravely, “Watch your tone.

Lukyan stood still. She had annoyed him, he could feel it in her scent. He swallowed and held his pose straight, though in the end he opted to turn and walk towards where his beta was headed.

He knew he couldn’t fight him, he kept repeating it over and over in his mind. That she had to keep her composure for the sake of all those who fell on her shoulders; stoop to take orders from him, but she would never, ever be anyone’s. She had not been Sylas’ and Sylas’. It had not been Sylas’ and it would not be his. Never!

Dante sighed. For an omega he was harder to handle than any wolf. He didn’t like submissive mates, but meeting one with a character like Lukyan was a whole new experience; one he found very interesting in his routine. He was convinced that in the end he would be the one to win and be totally his. That much he could be sure of.

Lukyan walked smoothly and to his luck more steadily. He felt the alpha at his back, close behind. He stopped at Ryan’s side when the silhouette of a she-wolf appeared blurred in his range of vision.

-My queen.” A sob came from the stranger.

Lukyan recognized her instantly.

-Katrina? The she-wolf nodded and knelt down, kissing his palms.

Dante found that it seemed to be a habit among them, remembering the repetitive pattern among several people who copied that she-wolf.

Lukyan smiled slightly at the impressed members who asked him questions about his health, how he was doing. Some could not believe he was alive. More than 50 years of being deceived by a cruel lie had taken its toll.

Some cubs would reach out and touch him with their fingertips to check he was not a ghost; his people had made his short reign a cult of legend after his supposed death. They loved him, he had been so good to them and had achieved stability in a time of chaos, he did not want his efforts to be hated in history.

Lukyan let out a snort. Surely they had gone overboard with more than one detail. The scent of exaltation and impression from the younger members of the pack filled the place.

-Your legs hurt,” one of the cubs asked her when she sat up after a few minutes and rubbed her thighs.

-I’m fine,” she calculated where the boy should be and reached out and ruffled his hair.

The boy let go, then ran to his mother, a very thin she-wolf who looked as if she had been through more than one job.

-Mum, he’s very handsome,” his mother smiled and bowed to Lukyan.

Ryan told her that he had explained the situation to them, and it was a relief. He still didn’t want to deal with it. That dark stage of his life, it wasn’t pleasant. Dante found himself admiring the pack’s devotion to him. The gleam in their eyes was genuine and some could not hide their enthusiasm. They didn’t blame him for disappearing for so many years and their husband leading them to ruin.

They really wanted him, loved him, respected him. How much had their queen done for the welfare of all? How much had she sacrificed? That was when Dante understood. He understood the meaning of her words.

-Where are most of the males? It struck him as odd that almost all of those present were she-wolves, pups, and the occasional older male.

-They are confined elsewhere. They have lost control, they are not aware of their actions and I will not risk them mistreating the weaker ones any further,” the alpha explained, avoiding a retort from the omega.

Dante approached cautiously, keeping himself as unimposing as possible, something that didn’t work as most of the pups retreated. It was something he would have to work on, and soon, in the pack’s acceptance.

He watched as Lukyan lowered his head, brushing his chin in a thoughtful pose. When he pulled her back up, the decision he saw did not bode well.

-Alpha, take me to them,” the request would not accept a refusal.

Dante merely raised an eyebrow.

-Not in your worst dreams,” he replied in annoyance.
