To bite, to tear without mercy were the thoughts that crossed Lukyan’s mind. Avenging the death of his family, and the wolves he had loved. Hatred consumed him and burned through every pore of his body, taking his breath away. There was nothing else.

The wolf in front of him was shaking, bigger than he remembered, more aggressive than in his memories, but that didn’t make him tremble. It moved slowly towards him, ruffling the fur on its back and pointing its muzzle at his neck. The omega was fast, it could finish him off.

Ryan then lunged at him. Lukyan dodged his body by moving to the right, still feeling the force against which he hit the snow. This was abnormal. The wolf’s face turned in his direction again and lunged straight for one of his paws. Lukyan leapt at it and moved away to a specific spot.

Revenge was delicious, but not when you had other priorities. He lamented, but he had two problems. First, as capable as he was, he was really weak and he knew he couldn’t stop it, plus Ryan’s strength felt extremely intense. Second, he had two wolves waiting for him. Every second he spent there was time subtracted from both of their lives. So with all the pain in his soul and regaining control of himself, he walked over to Sylas’ body and reached into his belt for the small pouch where he was sure the antidote was.

He clutched it in his teeth and pulled until he had it with him when an embracing pain shot from his loins to every part of his body and he felt himself lifted and thrown ten feet from where he stood. When he fell, b***d gushed from his muzzle and nose. It stained the fur on his body and would not stop. The pain was embracing and paralysing near his spine.

Out of the corner of his eye he could see Ryan watching him like a predator. It had attacked him so fast he hadn’t noticed. He tried to get up, but it seemed like a daunting task. He didn’t know how he had done it, but there were now toxins inside his system that were beginning to destroy his skin and muscles.

What the hell had Ryan become? He shuddered at the thought.

The wolf approached, when suddenly, it stopped and let out an ear-splitting howl. His forelegs buckled and he began to tremble. The muscles beneath his skin twitched strangely, growing, shrinking, looking like a bizarre image. Lukyan sat up slowly despite the pain, he could not stay there.

He thought about attacking it now that it seemed helpless but its gaze only dared him to come closer, and he knew that if he let his instincts take over he would end up under that body that was beginning to grow to ridiculous proportions. So he ran past it, grabbed one of the few intact bones of what was left of his daughter and kept running without looking back. He was afraid that if he did he might replace Ryan on top of him.

He ran, he ran wild, letting his legs carry him away. If he thought he wouldn’t make it, the pain in his back was like acid burning his body. Behind him, a trail of b***d followed. Her lungs squeezed, but she didn’t stop. They had said they were on the grounds of Lucian’s pack, she didn’t know the grounds, but someone must be nearby, like a sentry. Someone should detect it and warn them that it was happening.

But the idea faded when there was only snow everywhere and it was starting to fall from the sky again. His sense of smell was impaired and made it impossible for him to try to replace where any source of life might be. He couldn’t howl, if he couldn’t give Ryan his location and everything would go to hell.

He g*****d in frustration, he wanted the bag in his mouth to reach its destination quickly, but the way things were turning out it seemed luck was not on his side. He advanced a little over two kilometres when in the distance he saw a shadow and stopped on alert, though this took much of his energy. The figure seemed to detect him as well and ran towards him.

Lukyan took a few steps back so that the scent of the wolf could reach his nose and he could relax. It wasn’t an enemy, it was just Lucian’s beta. With difficulty he sat up and waited. He was wobbling a little unsteadily, now that relief was setting in.

Kier paused and wagged his tail slightly. Lukyan wanted to smile but found it impossible, the toxins in his body were seeping deep inside and would soon be in important organs, he found it almost funny that he was poisoned when he was saving others from poisoning as well, though in his case it was different. Ryan’s toxins were due to the change his body was undergoing. He had no idea what the hell was happening to him, but what was clear to him was that there was no cure inside him.

To stop its advance, he only did what was most advisable, he began to transform, that way they would lose at least a high percentage of effectiveness. The transformation was hellish and made him lose all his remaining strength.

-Take this to Falco,” he gasped, raising the bag in his small trembling hand in front of the beta’s nose, “He’ll know what to do with it, and tell him that Ryan is responsible for everything.

The wolf hesitated and also transformed grabbing him by the shoulders before he collapsed.

-I can’t leave you here.

Lukyan couldn’t tell Dante’s true state as this was supposed to be secret in the pack, but he had no choice if he wanted to put him on alert. He had no choice but to believe him.

-The lives of my alpha and my son are in danger,” she raised her head, looking him in the eye, “It depends on this that they continue to live, we can’t waste time. Please take them to him quickly.

Kier hesitated at her words.

-He’ll die if I leave him,” he frowned at his condition, especially the huge wound on his back that threatened to get worse.

Lukyan smiled slightly.

-My alpha’s life is more important, a lot of wolves depend on him,” he lurched forward, everything around him spinning, “I know he’ll hate me for doing this, my children are already upset, but at least they’ll be safe, and that’s what matters to me. Please take it to him,” he pushed the bag against the wolf’s chest again.

Kier swallowed and nodded reluctantly.

He knew Lucian would kill him for this. Lucian’s residence was a bit far away, the other sentries were spread out and if the situation was that bad it would take a long time to get him there and then go to Dante’s pack. Yes, Lucian would kill him for this for sure, but seeing the determination in the wolf’s eyes he couldn’t refuse.

-Wait here, they’ll come quickly for you.

He transformed into a wolf and let out a loud howl that echoed through the trees. Lukyan feared that Ryan heard it too, but he didn’t care anymore. A few seconds later, he found himself alone again, naked and groaning in the snow. He lowered his head and looked at his daughter’s bone and a tear fell down his cheek. He felt so helpless. He hated his omega nature, it usually made him physically weaker and it marked him.

He flexed his back a little and had to close his eyes. The skin tugged painfully. With trembling hands, he dug a hole in the ground. At least he had to bury the remains of his daughter. Having betrayed the pack, by law, she couldn’t perish on the pack grounds, and she didn’t want to force Dante to go against everyone for a selfish request. He couldn’t help a sob as the snow began to cover him again. It felt like a piece of him was buried there.

He had never gotten along with Laira, but she was still his daughter, the one he had carried in his stomach for months. He patted the snow as he finished closing the makeshift grave, tears frozen to his cheeks.

-Rest easy now,” he told her, and soon after he collapsed on the snow in exhaustion.

His eyes were closing.

In a way she was relieved. She had not been able to fulfil her revenge, but at least Sylas was dead, her daughter had her rest and the medicine to save her husband and son was on its way. You can’t always get everything in life, but at least she was content.

She only regretted not being able to see her husband’s face once more.
