Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 52
Chapter 52:
When I saw the blood running down Derek’s forehead, I got really scared. “Geez, Derek, are you okay? Don’t scare me like that.” I said in a shaky voice.
He hugged me and smiled. Gently, he gently pushed the shards of glass away from my hair.
“Silly girl,” he murmured in a loving voice.
Luckily, the police arrived in time. Due to the aftermath of the fight, everyone was injured to varying degrees, so they were first taken to the hospital to treat their wounds.
I watched as a doctor cleaned Derek’s wound and removed the glass debris from his scalp with tweezers. It hurt my heart to see him in that state. From start to finish, he didn’t even flinch or wince. He looked so calm that he didn’t seem to be hurt. There was a lot of blood on his white shirt, making it particularly bloody.
The back of Louise’s hand had also been grazed, and the doctor took care of it as well.
As the doctor treated Felix’s wound, for some reason, he seemed annoyed. Suddenly, he grabbed Louise’s hand, looking at the wound on her hand.
“What happened to you, why did you get into a fight between men?”
Louise pulled her hand away, giving him a bit of a hard time. “So what if I’m a woman? Don’t you dare to give women a hard time. Without me, you probably would have been beaten to death.”
Felix couldn’t seem to refute her assertion. He was so angry that he kicked the chair next to him.
Once their wounds were attended to, they were all taken to the police station for questioning in isolation.
Meanwhile, I waited outside on my own, suffering every second.
I wasn’t in the mood to think about why Derek had started that fight. I was worried about him. I had no idea how serious it was, but I knew he had started the fight, so he should probably take the most responsibility for what happened.
The first to come out was Louise. She immediately sat down next to me.
“They said it was no big deal. Don’t worry, Eve. They’re just asking us for a brief statement of what happened.”
She spoke in a nonchalant manner, perhaps in an attempt to comfort me. “Eve, someone as capable as Derek is sure to get out of this whole mess without breaking a sweat. Believe me, if I couldn’t make this thing go away, I wouldn’t have started that fight,” he continued.

I wondered if that were true. I wasn’t that optimistic about it. As capable as Derek was, surely the law would show no mercy to anyone.
Louise and I had been waiting for an hour. It was too long for us.
The moment Derek came out of the interrogation room, I was stunned.
The bandage on his head and the blood on his white shirt still made him look especially gruesome. Yet he walked nonchalantly with one hand in his pocket and a cigarette in the other wrapped in gauze. Somehow, to me, he didn’t look like he had just stepped out of an interrogation room. He looked to me like he had just played cards.
I walked over to his side and asked, “Are you okay?”
Derek put his injured hand on my shoulder and sketched a smile, despite how tired he looked.
“Better than ever,” he replied.
Moments later, the others came out one after another.
Inside the police station, not a single glance was exchanged. But the moment they came out, Felix finally burst out in anger, pointing at those ruffians with a warning.
“You better not show me your ugly faces again, you assholes!”.
I looked at his enemies and prayed in my heart that they wouldn’t start a fight again at the entrance of the police station right after the matter was settled.
Perhaps because he knew that that was not a place where they should fight, the leader of the other party merely raised an eyebrow and said, “Don’t be so arrogant, brat. I’ll see you another day.”
Having said that, he looked at Louise and put on a playful smile.
“You’re a good fighter, girl. I like you.”
My heart sank as I realized something bad was about to happen.
Just as I expected, Felix threw his half-smoked cigarette on the ground, cursed and prepared to assault the other man. Fortunately, Derek stopped him just in time.
Seeing Felix’s reaction, the leader smiled at him.
“Is that your wife?” he commented.
Felix burst out in anger as he gritted his teeth, pointing at the leader of the other party as his chest heaved. “Listen carefully, man. She is my wife. If you try to lay a hand on her, I’ll make you sorry for the rest of your life!”.
The leader must have spent a lot of time in the underworld, so Felix’s threat meant nothing to him.
He merely looked at Louise and replied, “Oh, I see. So now I’m even more interested in her. Miss beautiful, remember my name. It’s Layne Thurman.”
“Just get the hell out of here. Stay out of my way.”
Louise didn’t show Layne a shred of respect, but Layne didn’t seem to get angry about it. She merely looked at her injured hand and smiled. “One of my buddies hurt you by accident. I’m going to teach them a good lesson when I get back,” Layne said.
“Didn’t you hear her tell you to get the hell out of here?” barked Felix.
It seemed that Felix’s patience had run out. If Layne delayed any longer, a fierce battle would break out again.
Fortunately, Layne and his men finally went on their way.
“What nonsense were you talking?” Louise shot a glance at Felix. She must have been talking about him having declared that she was his wife.
At this point, he looked frustrated. He pulled a cigarette out of his pocket and commented, “Don’t be silly. That Layne is a fucking asshole.”
Without even giving him a glance, she replied, “I know. I don’t need you to remind me.” At that point, the singer who was harassed at the bar walked out of the police station.
