Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 53
Chapter 53:.
I had a vague feeling that Derek had started the fight because of the singer, so I unconsciously turned my attention to her.
While we were at the bar, I was only paying attention to her performance. Now that I was looking closely at her, I discovered that she was lovely and had long brown hair.
As I looked at the guitar on her back, I remembered the one in Derek’s room and how strangely she performed that day when I found her.
Therefore, I was even more certain that the reason he was fighting today was because of this woman.
As she stood in front of him, she held the hem of her clothes, giving the impression of being quite uneasy.
“Derek, you need to know that what happened today is a regular occurrence. I’m a singer who works in a bar. It happens, okay? Besides, in the eyes of others, a woman like me is not pure. If we retaliate after being teased, they’re going to say we’re being too sentimental. I’m used to this kind of thing. You didn’t have to start a fight because of what happened.”
The way she spoke to him reminded me of how Derek left my house despite how hard it was raining that night.
Was it possible that this woman was the same person who had called him at that time?
I looked at Derek, hoping to get a response from him.
He took a puff on his cigarette, gave the woman a look and said, “Concentrate on singing. Someone will appreciate your performance someday.”
Felix walked over to her side and patted the singer on the shoulder. “Go home, Cindy Draper. There’s no need to worry. That bar is mine, and I will not allow my employees to be wronged like that.”
I only heard her name from Felix. She said she was Cindy Draper.
Apparently moved by his statement, she nodded and expressed her gratitude. “Thank you, Felix. I’ll be on my way anyway.” With that, Cindy turned and walked off into the night.
I watched her walk away and put aside my doubts about her relationship with Derek. But if I was being honest, I was feeling pretty excited about this.
Every profession had its own share of difficulties. Everyone was trying to do their best to survive. Life wasn’t easy for anyone.

Later, we parted ways. Louise called her father’s driver to pick her up, while we took a cab back to the villa.
With his eyes closed and a hand on his forehead, Derek leaned against the headboard.
“Are you all right?” I was worried about him.
“I’m fine. Just a little dizzy, that’s all,” he said.
Hearing him say that, I became even more worried. “Do you want to go to the hospital for a CT scan? There could be an underlying problem we don’t know about yet.”
She took her hand off her forehead, laughed and said, “Your husband is feeling dizzy from hunger, Eve.”
“Ah, I see. Then I’ll go to the kitchen and make some porridge,” I replied.
Derek nodded in response.
When I came downstairs, I ran into Felix and Eric. I pointed upstairs to imply that Derek was up there, so they nodded and went upstairs.
In the meantime, I made some mince porridge and carried a bowl up to Derek’s room.
As I was near the door to his room, I heard them talking inside.
I had no idea why I slowed down and made sure my footsteps were quiet.
“Derek, it’s been eight years since it happened. Let it go, man,” Felix said.
My hands tightened over the bowl.
“I’ve long since moved on, Felix,” Derek said.
“If that were true, why did you act like that today? Even if you didn’t mean to, the others might think you were defending Cindy. Besides, there are so many women who would want to sleep with you! Why did you marry a divorced woman of all people?”
As I stood in the doorway, completely dumbfounded, I wondered what Derek’s response would be.
I was hopeful and fearful at the same time. I felt my heart prick repeatedly with a knife from such anticipation.
I wanted to run away, because I was so afraid to hear his answer. But, for some reason, I dared not move from my seat.
“Eveline, why don’t you come in?” said Eric from behind me. The sound of his voice startled me.
Beautiful, the door opened from the inside. Felix was standing inside the room, staring at me.
“Do you want to eat? There’s still some porridge left in the kitchen,” I said, doing my best to sound calm.
With one hand in his pocket, Felix came out of the room and replied, “You know what? I’m a little hungry. Come on, Eric. Let’s go downstairs and eat.”
Then he slipped his arm around Eric’s shoulders and went downstairs with him.
