Chapter 57:.

Although one of Derek’s hands was injured, it didn’t affect his riding at all. If anything, he looked very graceful with only one hand on the wheel.

There was no highway to get to Qinben, the area where his grandfather lived, so we had no choice but to take the long route. We spent four hours on the road, and by the time we arrived, it was well into the wee hours of the morning.

Derek parked the car next to a huge red brick wall. It must have been his grandfather’s residence at the time. The patio door was slightly ajar. When we opened it, both Derek and I froze at what we saw.

There, in the middle of a picturesque orchard, stood a gray-haired old man, plowing with all his might. He must have heard the door creak because he instantly straightened up and turned in our direction. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and looked at me.

“Grandpa,” Derek called, sounding somewhat annoyed. “Didn’t you say you’d fallen?”

perfectly his frustration. I had been worried about the old man all this time.

“You’ve finally brought my granddaughter-in-law to meet me!” her grandfather said jovially, his eyes sparkling with triumph.

“Hello, Grandpa,” I greeted with a little bow. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Eveline.”

The old man took a couple of swipes with the hoe to remove the mud before leaving his garden. He pointed a finger at Derek’s injured head and narrowed his eyes.

“What have you done this time? You’re almost thirty, but you still don’t act your age. Now that you’re married, you should learn how to behave. You can’t make your wife worry about you,” he said in a domineering tone.

“You’re past seventy, Grandpa,” Derek replied, “Don’t you think you’re too old to be playing jokes like this?”

The old man limped over to a chair and laughed as he sat down.

“Would you have come sooner if I hadn’t lied to you? Were you planning to introduce me to my granddaughter-in-law? Or are you going to take her to my grave after I die?”

Derek had talked about his grandfather during our trip. Apparently, the old man had decided to move to the country after his retirement. His wife had died long ago, and he had been living alone ever since.

Today, the old man was wearing a gray shirt, neatly pressed suit pants and gold-rimmed glasses. He was definitely not your typical country old man. And even though he lived alone in this house, his yard was very clean and organized. I didn’t even see a patch of grass in his beautiful yard.

He clearly placed a lot of importance on the quality of life he led.

He didn’t seem to care much about extravagance and luxury, but rather about comfort and a sense of freedom.

Even now, when he spoke of his own death, his smile was serene.

I greatly admired his mentality and envied his lifestyle. If one could live so peacefully in his old age, it would probably be the greatest reward for all his hard work in youth.

It seemed a pity to me, then, that the lively old man was actually suffering from terminal cancer. The thought left a sour taste in my mouth.

“It’s okay, Grandpa. I made a mistake, okay?”

Derek sat down on a small stool and smiled sheepishly at his grandfather. He was a rare sight to behold. He looked like a disheveled teenager who had been caught red-handed by one of his elders.

The old man hummed contentedly and smiled. “If you know you’re wrong, then that’s enough. I know the young people like life in the City and don’t care to come to the country, but I love it here. The air is good and fresh, and it’s very peaceful.”

When I first saw Derek’s grandfather, I had to admit I was terrified.

However, after sitting down and chatting with him, I relaxed considerably.

To make a good impression on him, I offered to cook.

Later, as I was washing vegetables in the kitchen sink, a pair of arms suddenly appeared from behind me and wrapped around my waist.

I felt my face flush. I squirmed in his arms, shoving him away.

“Grandpa’s out,” I reprimanded under my breath.

But Derek only tightened his arms and clung even tighter to me. Then his deep voice boomed in my ears.

“Keep moving like that and I’ll fuck you right here and now. I still have plenty of fire left from last night.”

I immediately stood still, afraid to make a single move.

I heard his low chuckle before I felt him press a kiss into my hair. “I’ve decided to stay here for a while, maybe a week. I’ve thought about it and realized I haven’t spent much time with Grandpa.”

I didn’t object. In fact, I really liked the simple country life.

Derek’s grandfather kept complimenting my cooking when we sat down to dinner. “You are very lucky,” he told his grandson. “These days, there aren’t many young women who can cook.”

As if to show the old man, Derek grabbed my hand at the table and looked at me tenderly. “Yes, I consider myself very lucky too.”

I blushed and looked down. I was just trying to ride his act, of course.

Subtly, I pinched his palm.

He let out an exaggerated hiss of pain. “What’s wrong?” asked Grandpa.

I felt my heart beat faster. What if he ratted me out and complained to his grandfather? “I got a cramp in my leg,” Derek replied with a straight face.

Then a laugh almost escaped me, but I managed to stop myself in time. Still, I didn’t dare pinch him again for the rest of the meal.
