Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 66
Chapter 66:
“Lulu, are you okay?” I asked softly.
Louise turned to give me a look with a listless expression on her face. “Something bad has happened.”
“What is it?” I walked over and sat on the edge of the bed.
She groaned and rubbed her temples before saying, “My head is still throbbing.”
I looked around nonchalantly, but found no one else in the room. “Where’s Felix?”
Louise said nothing, just picked up a note from the bedside table and handed it to me.
The words written on it were blunt: “You are in the presidential suite you wanted so badly. You’d better get a good night’s sleep, or this will just be a big waste of my money.” I gasped.
I stifled a gasp. What did he mean by this?
“He hasn’t slept with me,” Louise said hurriedly. Then she plopped down on the bed, her hair falling over her face like a flimsy curtain.
“What did you say?” I asked, with evident surprise.
Louise tossed and turned a little more on the bed. Finally, she lay on her back and crossed her arms over her chest. She let out a long sigh. She seemed quite disappointed with this turn of events.
I leaned over to her and touched her cheek. “Did you really want to sleep with him last night?”
“That’s bullshit!” Louise slapped my hand away and smiled. “I had no such intentions. Still, for a guy to bring me to a presidential suite and not even sleep with me? It’s embarrassing! I’d be mortified if others found out about this.”
She then let out an unfunny, almost maniacal laugh and proceeded to roll around again. Her hair was still covering her face, so I couldn’t see her expression clearly. But I could tell she was confused, probably unable to process the complicated feelings she was having at that moment.
All this time, I had been thinking that, if Felix had really slept with her the night before, then that would definitely kill her chances of pursuing a serious relationship with Louise. However, it hadn’t. She had been drunk and alone in the same room with him, but Felix had held back. This simple detail would surely have a big impact on Louise.
“By the way, isn’t this your first day on the job? How has it gone? Has anyone harassed you?” asked Louise one by one.
“It’s gone well. My position isn’t important enough for people to restrict me. No one bullied me either, and my supervisor is very nice to me.”
“That’s fine then. You’d better get back to work. Now that you have your own job, you can start being more independent. Then you can trust yourself, even if you lose your man. But I think Derek is very good to you. You have to appreciate that.”

As Louise spoke, she turned around again and propped her feet up on the headrest. It didn’t look like she was going to be leaving the hotel any time soon.
Now that she had mentioned Derek, I suddenly remembered how I had talked to the editor-in-chief behind my back yesterday. What the hell had they been talking about? Why were they so intent on keeping it from me?
It was true that Derek was good to me, but I could never see through him.
In any case, since Louise seemed fine, I felt at ease to return to the hospital. Shortly after I arrived, the head of the human resources department approached me and told me not to work the night shifts for the time being. He said that the night hours tended to be hectic and that I needed more practice before immersing myself in that kind of environment.
I considered that a blessing. Although I had often done night shifts when I was a nurse at Virtue Hospital, I had let a lot of time go by between jobs. It was good to have this opportunity to first adjust to my new workplace.
The day went by without incident. When it was finally time to clock in, Derek called me and told me he would wait for me at the same place where he had dropped me off that morning.
As we walked the streets, I quickly realized he wasn’t taking me home. I asked him where we were going.
“It’s your first day on the job, how are you feeling?”
“Fine,” I answered truthfully.
Derek pulled into the parking lot of a major shopping mall in town. He parked expertly and opened the car door for me, holding my hand as he guided me toward the mall entrance.
“Did you come to buy clothes?” I asked him.
He gave me a sidelong glance before answering. “We’re buying it for you.”
I stopped dead in my tracks and tugged on his hand. “You already bought me tons of clothes last time. I haven’t even worn them all. Don’t waste so much money on me.”
He seemed amused by the sternness of my tone. He cocked his head to one side and said to me.
“But you are attending a wedding on August 15, aren’t you, don’t you want to look stunning?”.
I opened my mouth to respond, but my thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice.
“What the hell is wrong with the clerks here, why don’t they allow their customers to try on the clothes they sell?”
Vivien was pointing at a poor sales clerk and shrieking like the harpy she was.
Next to her, Shane was trying to push her away with a scowl on his face. He should have been embarrassed by this little scene.
He hadn’t expected to meet them here, precisely in this place. The brands this mall had were all world renowned, and none of the clothes were cheap. Knowing Shane, he sure as hell wouldn’t bring Vivien here to buy clothes. He wasn’t that generous. It would be more likely that she would have forced him to come here.
The salesgirl held up a delicate dress, which she subtly held out of Vivien’s reach.
“I’m afraid you misunderstood me, madam,” the girl said kindly. “I only meant to say that you are currently pregnant and therefore cannot wear this particular dress. I was only trying to help you, so you won’t waste your time.”
The dress was a beige evening gown with a unique, modern cut at the shoulders. The fabric shimmered in the light and the bodice was stitched with intricate designs. It was a stunning piece, but, unfortunately, it was also tight. Vivien’s belly protruded slightly at this point. It was obvious that she couldn’t wear this dress .
