Love at the Door -
Chapter 80
Chapter 80
That’s all? No problem, I’ll head over right away,” Toby said.
“Thank you so much, Dr. Ludwig. I really appreciate it. Please don’t tell Andrew it was me who asked you to go for checking,” Melina requested.
“I got it, I won’t say a word,” Toby promised.
As Toby listened to Melina’s gentle request, he couldn’t help but feel a little heavy- hearted. She was still worried about Andrew’s injury, even after everything.
He couldn’t resist helping Andrew to defend himself. “Melina, don’t be too upset about today. When Linda was younger, she saved Andrew, and then she met with an accident that left her really sick. Andrew only saved her first today because he didn’t want anything to happen to her.”
Melina responded gently, “I understand, and I’m not upset.”
She said she wasn’t upset, but Toby could still hear a hit of sadness in her voice.
Toby couldn’t bear to see Melina sad, and he tried to change the topic, “By the way, Melina, how old are you now? I heard you just graduated from high school. Are your even old enough to be married to Andrew?”
He didn’t dare to call her “Mrs. Wentworth” anymore as he worried it might make her
feel worse.
Melina answered honestly, “I just turned 20 last month. I had to start school two years late because I didn’t have enough money for education when I was a kid.”
Toby felt a pang of guilt in his chest. Every time he talked to her, he wanted to kick himself as well as Andrew. Melina was a girl who couldn’t afford school at one point, and Andrew had convinced himself that she was some manipulative fox.
Toby wanted to scold Andrew until he realized that he was wrong!
After Melina finished her call, she finally felt at ease and drifted off to sleep.
She woke up at 6:00 am and felt refreshed.
As soon as she finished washing up, the phone rang.
Since Melina didn’t have many contacts, she wondered who would be calling her this
rly.
Glancing at the screen, she saw it was Joshua who called.
Her heart skipped a beat. Before school ended, Joshua had mentioned more than once that he was considering giving up on the school. Now, with him calling so early, Melina had a bad feeling.
She quickly answered, “Mr. White.”
On the other end, Joshua’s weary voice sounded heavy with defeat, “Melina, I don’t think we can keep the school open much longer.”
“What happened? What’s going on?” Melina asked anxiously.
“It’s been raining heavily in the mountains lately. The roof of the school had started leaking, and now the walls are beginning to crack. After this summer, the old building will be too dangerous. We can’t let the children study in a collapsing school,” Joshua replied.
“How did this happen?”
Melina had thought there were just issues with books and supplies, and she had already planned to send money back for those before the new school year started. But now, it wasn’t just about supplies; the whole building was at risk of collapsing.
Joshua continued, “I’ve crunched the numbers. To rebuild the school, we need at least 200 thousand dollars.”
“I’ve tried to raise money everywhere I can, even sold crops that I could form my family’s harvest, but I’ve only managed to gather only 80 thousand dollars. It’s just not enough, Melina.”
“Maybe it’s time to let the school go. The kids can attend school in the neighboring
town.”
Melina was anxious. “No, that won’t work!” They’d have to cross a mountain to get. there! The journey is too far, and the roads are dangerous. Some families won’t allow their kids to go. I’ll raise the money and replace a different way!”
Joshua signed on the other end, “Lina, you’ve already done so much for this school. Mr. Clay has already passed away. Why do you keep pushing yourself?”
Melina’s hand tightened around her phone, and her heart ached at the mention of her late teacher,
t her voice only grew more resolute. “No, Mr. Clay is still here. I’m his student. If I old onto his beliefs, he’s still with us. Mr. White, I will raise the money!”
A heavy sigh echoed through the line before the call ended.
Chap 00
Melina sat quietly for a moment after the call ended, her eyes red with emotion.
Then, a bright smile broke across her face as she whispered, “Mr. Clay, I hope you’re doing well up there.
“You don’t have to worry. I’ll make sure your dream comes true.
“I’ll work even harder starting from today!”
