Love Comes To Me -
Chapter 974: Taking the blame and resigning
Khan Group.
There was a lot of noise in the large meeting, and almost everyone had "angry" written on their faces.
As soon as Edgar and Mr Cranshaw entered, there was immediate silence.
Mr Cranshaw scanned the circle of those present before raising his hand and patting Edgar on the shoulder before walking to his seat and sitting down.
Looking at the ill-faced directors, Edgar knew he had a tough fight on his hands.
He took a deep breath, lifted his steps and walked over to the chair, just pulling it out to sit down, when someone impatiently raised a question.
"Edgar, why didn't you tell us about the fire? Shouldn't you have given us an explanation?"
Edgar squeezed his hand tightly and whirled it loose, looking up, looking at the man with a frank expression, "I was too busy investigating to tell you yet, and didn't mean to hide it." "You say that, or have we wronged you?" The man clearly didn't believe you his explanation.
"I'm telling the truth, and there's nothing I can do if you don't believe me."
Edgar didn't want to dwell on the issue with him.
Angered by his attitude, the man yelled out directly, "Do you know how many years I have followed your grandfather? How dare you talk to me with that kind of attitude?"
"That's enough!" Mr Cranshaw barked out, glancing coldly at the man, "How old are you, can't you settle down? Even if you're angry, you need to listen carefully to what people are saying."
Mr Cranshaw is the most senior person here, and no one else can give Edgar face without giving him face.
The man held back his anger, but still reluctantly rushed Edgar, "Well, I'll listen and see what you have to say clearly."
Edgar cast a grateful glance at Mr Cranshaw, who gave a slight nod of his head, signalling him to speak boldly.
Silence returned to the meeting room once again.
Edgar deliberated for a moment before speaking slowly, "After the police investigation, the fire was caused by an unextinguished cigarette butt, as the warehouse was full of dry herbs and the dry weather made it almost completely burnt down."
When this was said, the directors looked at me and looked at you, none of them could accept this.
"We have automatic fire extinguishing systems in every warehouse, how can it still burn so badly?" Someone questioned.
Edgar looked over and explained seriously, "The police gave the result that the fire was too big for the automatic fire extinguishing system to work properly."
"Which employee on duty smoked the cigarette?" Mr Cranshaw asked.
"Frankson from the storage department."
In fact, the directors did not know the person Edgar was talking about.
"Where is the man? What did he say?" Mr Cranshaw asked again. Edgar didn't hide a thing and was truthful: "He's in hospital now."
At these words, there was an uproar around the room.
"How come people are in hospital?"
"Could it have been a burn?"
"It's going to be bad for the Khan Group if word gets out."
...
There was so much chatter that Edgar couldn't help but raise his voice and interrupt them, "Quiet for a moment, everyone, and listen to me."
When everyone had quieted down, he continued, "It could be food poisoning causing vomiting and diarrhoea, not burns."
"So that's it." The others breathed a sigh of relief.
But the next thing Edgar said made their hearts lift again.
"It's a serious situation and there's a chance that you might not live."
Mr Cranshaw's face immediately changed when he heard, "How can food poisoning be so bad?"
"The doctors aren't completely sure of the cause of the illness yet, and it's only on temporary life support for now." Edgar's voice trailed off as he spoke. Once again the meeting room fell silent and the atmosphere became somewhat heavy.
After a long time, Mr Cranshaw was the first to speak, "This is really too strange."
It was only after he mentioned this that the others reacted and said that things were indeed strange.
The fact that it was only about ten hours between the fire and Frankson's hospitalisation really makes one suspicious.
"Edgar, did the police have anything to say?" Mr Cranshaw asked.
"They said they would definitely continue to investigate and would keep me informed if they found anything."
Mr Cranshaw thought about it, "We can't just rely on the police, we have to replace a way to investigate things ourselves."
This statement was echoed by others.
"The matter has to be investigated, but an account has to be given." The man who spoke was the one who had challenged Edgar at the beginning.
Edgar looked over towards him with a slight frown, the man who had always been on Arlice's side and who had previously led the charge against supporting him as the Khan Group's heir.
It's just a basic operation that would embarrass him like this today.
With this in mind, Edgar felt better and he turned to his assistant to send out the loss statistics for the fire.
The first time the directors got it they all looked down.
"Hundreds of millions!" Someone exclaimed out loud.
This was expected by Edgar as he rose and explained, "There are some rare herbs in this warehouse, as well as quite a lot of Western Crow's Head, Crow's Root, and One Piece Red, which are not considered rare, but their medicinal value is something I think everyone here knows better than I do."
"So hundreds of millions is still just a rough estimate."
The directors were somewhat stunned by this value.
When it eased up, someone immediately said, "Edgar, you've only just taken over the Khan Group and something this serious has happened, I think you have to take the blame for this."
"Yes, I agree. Someone has to take the blame for this."
The few people who chimed in were either Arlice's or Goode's people.
Edgar returned unruffled, "I'll take it on, don't worry guys."
"How do you want to take it on?" The other man asked.
"I'll get things looked into."
The other person stared incredulously, "That's all?"
Mr Cranshaw frowned and his face sank, these guys really know how to "see the opportunity".
Edgar was young, but it was still instantly clear what they were really up to.
He deliberately played dumb, "So what do you guys think I should do?"
The directors exchanged glances with each other, "Resign, we don't think you are suitable to be the president, someone capable should be appointed." Edgar was silent.
He watched them quietly, his face stoic, with no hint of panic visible at all.
At this point, Mr Cranshaw spoke up.
"Edgar was handpicked by Grandpa Khan as his successor, are you going too far in asking him to resign?"
"Mr Cranshaw, we know your relationship with Grandpa Khan and would naturally be on Edgar's side, but we're also doing what's best for the Khan Group, aren't we?"
"Is that so?" Mr Cranshaw sneered, "You know best whether you are doing this for the good of the Khan Group or for your own selfish reasons."
"I'm not quitting." Edgar's tone was firm, "My grandfather trusted me, and I will not let him down. I do have a responsibility for this fire, and I will take responsibility for what I am responsible for, and I ask my uncles and uncles to give me another chance."
The directors were all a little distracted by Mr Cranshaw's words, and now that he had said so, they dared not give him a hard time.
You can only go along with the steps, "We'll give you a week, and if things don't come to a head, you'll resign."
