Sweet Twins Indulge in Daddy's Love -
Chapter 293 Can You Smile
After a sumptuous dinner and tidying up the kitchen, Nancy and Doris proceeded to take a shower. Then, to cap off the night, Jay decided to snuggle in the living room and watch the TV.
Sitting by himself on the couch and with the remote control in his hand, he gazed at Doris with his enigmatic pair of eyes.
The woman tucked her hair behind her ear and cast a reproachful glance at him. "What are you looking at?" she uttered with furrowed brows.
But Jay stuck his index finger on his lips, signaling Doris not to lash out as he intently stared at her.
"What are you doing? Are you keeping a secret from me? Jay, don't tell me you're going to the bar again? Which woman are you going to see tonight, huh? It must be that Libby, right? I knew it!" Doris perpetually ranted, holding her hands on her waist while sporting a look of disbelief. The mere thought of that woman, Libby, wracked her nerves to the pits of hell.
Sensing her boiling anger as evidenced by her flaring nose, Jay slowly put down the remote control and helplessly walked towards Doris. He lowered his voice and heaved a sigh before muttering, "I don't want to go to the bar, nor do I want to see Libby. Charles just asked me a favor, and I know only you can do it. He wants to know what happened to Nancy."
"What else can happen? Your dear friend Charles probably hurt her!" Now, a scornful expression was painted all over Doris' face as she spat those words.
"Well, whether he hurt Nancy or not, shouldn't you replace out the truth? After all, she's your friend, and I can't deal with Charles'tantrums unless I give him some answers.
Please, honey, you have to help me, okay?" Jay pleaded in a soft tone, caressing Doris' shoulders for an added plea.
"Well, if you kiss me, I'll help you ask her or..." The raised brows and bitten lips exhibited her strong desire to cuddle at that moment. But the shy Doris wouldn't admit to it and instead merely pointed at her right cheek as a signal to guide Jay's lips.
The latter, who hesitated for a while, turned his head to look at the bedroom, fearing that Nancy would come out. Although she and Doris were good friends, there were some things between a couple better left unseen by others. And frankly, for Jay, this moment was one of them.
"What? You don't want to kiss me? Humph! It's your loss! Good luck explaining to Charles!" Doris flared, pouting her lips to show her irritation. Then, stomping her feet, she turned around and prepared to leave however, Jay was quick enough to grab her arm and pull her back.
"Alright, alright. I'll do it. I have already kissed you so many times, so this is nothing," the latter uttered with the sexiest voice he could muster.
Then, slowly, he leaned closer and planted a light kiss on her cheek.
"That's it? That's the best kiss you got? Fine! You know what, if you don't want to kiss me, just say so! Why give me that look and useless peck on the cheek? Huh! You don't like me anymore, do you?" As if he flaring nose and furrowed brows were not enough, Doris crossed her arms across her chest to show her distaste and extreme annoyance.
Meanwhile, Jay was utterly left speechless at how blunt this woman was. So, to ease her anger, he gently wrapped her in his arms and landed hard kisses on her face.
"There! Are you satisfied now? Can you promise me that you'll help me?" "Well, I know you kissed me just to give Charles an answer and not because you actually wanted to. But in whichever case, I forgive you. I'm tired now. I'm going to bed," Doris uttered, trying to conceal the smug smile from escaping her lips. Then, she yawned and walked to the bedroom lazily.
At the same time, Nancy had already made the bed when Doris went in. And as soon as the latter walked in, Nancy casually asked, "What are you two talking about? And why are your voices so discreet? Are you afraid I'll hear something I shouldn't?"
Remembering her cunning little moment just a while ago, Doris blushed and sat on the bed's edge. "It's nothing. Jay just wanted me to ask you if you were bullied in the hospital. And don't you dare hide it from me. Tell me, and I will help you take revenge."
Although Doris sounded so confident, Nancy knew better than to get her friend into trouble, especially now that her belly had swollen into a size of a watermelon. "Wow. I didn't expect you to be so capable. You know you're pregnant, right? You have to be extra careful now that there's a baby inside you. How could you even think of fighting in that state? You don't have to worry. Even if someone tried to harm me, there is always the police. They can handle that. I don't need you to protect me. And you know I'd hate myself if something happened to you and the baby because of me," Nancy explained in her soft tone. For a while, she paused and caressed her friend's massive baby bump. Then, she continued, "As long as you and the baby are fine, I'll be relieved. You don't need to worry about me."
"So I was right? Someone really did harm you in that hospital, huh? Why are you not telling me these things? I'm your friend! Even if I can't help you, Charles and Jay are still here. But I'm curious. Who would dare to bully you? You are now the director of the Pediatric Department. Who is so blind to bump heads with you? Don't they know that you have Charles behind you? Is that arrogant person not afraid of him at all?" Doris bombarded Nancy with those questions, evident that she, too, was aggravated.
"Stop thinking about that, okay? I'm just a little unhappy. Come on! It's time to go to bed." Obviously enough, Nancy was trying to dismiss the topic; otherwise, Doris would not stop asking her about it. Knowing her friend, she wouldn't keep herself from getting involved. And right now, that was the last thing she wanted; it was just too dangerous for her.
If Doris knew that she had a conflict with Jessie, the former would storm in the hospital and have a row with Jessie.
That matter was already a mess in itself, and getting Doris involved would only make things worse. So instead of playing it honestly, Nancy had to render the topic moot.
"I won't sleep unless you tell me everything," said Doris stubbornly. She crossed her arms against her chest and cocked her head slightly to the right to showcase her impatience.
"Come on! Why are you acting like a child? Is it also because of the pregnancy?" Nancy chuckled as she said that half-jokingly.
"Yes, I'm pregnant right now, so you have to answer to my pleas." This time, Doris was determined to use the pregnant card against her friend, knowing that it worked for many people over time. "Tell me, is it Jay who asked you to interrogate me?" Nancy narrowed her eyes.
She knew Doris to be a tactless and erratic woman, who'd never do anything unusual unless something was wrong. There must be a reason why she kept on bugging her about it.
And because Nancy was obviously trying to get to the bottom of it, Doris flashed her an awkward smile. 'Was I too obvious?' Doris thought, but her anxiousness did not slip through Nancy's sharp senses. However, even if Nancy saw through her, she still wouldn't admit to it.
So, instead, she claimed, "What? Why would Jay do that? I'm just concerned and trying to be a good friend. Can't I ask you such questions? Come on, Nancy! I have always been so kind to you, but why don't you warm up to me? You always seem so distant and cold. Fine! Since you don't want to tell me, I won't ask anymore. I'll sleep now."
If the pregnant trick wouldn't work, Doris thought of faking her anger. Perhaps it would somehow touch the soft side of Nancy that she had always known. So, she lay on the bed with her back facing Nancy and pretended to sleep.
"Doris, are you mad? Pregnant women can't go to bed, angry. It's not good for the baby," Nancy coaxed, slightly nudging Doris' left shoulder.
"How can I not be mad? You don't even trust me. I remember that you were not like this before. You don't suspect or even doubt me. What changed, huh? I'm your best friend! Why are you like this? You're making me so sad," Doris muttered in the fakest sorrowful voice she could muster. Even if Nancy couldn't see her, she pouted her lips and pretended to cry.
And although Nancy was annoyed, she didn't want to upset her pregnant friend. So, she heaved a heavy sigh and laydown beside her after turning off the light.
A sly smile crept on Doris's lips as she felt the mattress sank beside her.
She knew that Nancy had always been such a softhearted woman. There was no way she'd let her sleep in sorrow. As silence fell upon them and only the low grumbling of the air conditioner filled the room, Doris waited for her friend's response.
As expected, after a while, Nancy spoke softly.
Tm tired of working in the hospital. What do you think I should do?"
