Chapter 248:

Yolanda was specialized in chip technology, and the robot she sent came with a built-in self-destruct mechanism.

When Alice tried to play the video, it had already been completely erased.

There was no trace that it had ever existed.

Since the call had come directly from Yolanda, Alicia hadn't thought to record it.

Plus, Yolanda had been careful not to record anything sensitive or incriminating, so Alicia had nothing to hold on to.

It was as if the whole thing had never happened.

Alicia didn't know what would happen next.

But one thing was clear: she was no longer afraid.

Facing Yolanda was completely different from facing Joshua.

Regardless of Yolanda's plans, Alicia felt safe enough to protect herself.

Collecting her thoughts, she responded to Caden's message.

When Caden finished his meeting, he called her.

Alicia pursed her lips before answering.

“I misjudged you before.

I’m sorry.

Do you want to yell at me for revenge?” he asked.

Caden replied, “What did you do wrong?”

He remembered his anger during the previous call and sensed that something serious had happened.

Alicia explained: “I received a prank package and assumed it was from you.

But I just found out who was really behind it.

Caden’s voice held a hint of frustration.

“Whenever something goes wrong, I’m the first one to get blamed.

Why don’t I ever get credit when something good happens?”

Alice gave an awkward giggle.

“You have to admit that you’re not exactly trustworthy.

You can’t argue with that, can you?” he sneered.

In a low voice, Caden asked, “Are you seriously insulting me to my face now?”

"Have I ever insulted you behind your back?" Alice replied.

Caden fell silent, unable to give an immediate response.

Not willing to let her win, he decided to change gears.

He casually mentioned a few dishes he wanted, hoping she would cook them later that evening.

When the call ended, Yolanda walked out of the hallway.

"Jeffery is here.

He's waiting for you in the office.

"

Caden gathered his composure and replied, “If it was important, Hank would have told me.

Yolanda just smiled.

“I was passing by and thought I should mention it,” she said, holding the documents in her hands.

She figured it was time to leave and added, “I’ll finish this and then I’ll go back to the Joy mansion.

“Okay, see you,” Caden said.

After he walked away, Yolanda stood there, watching until he disappeared from sight.

He was probably talking to Alicia again.

Despite his usual calm demeanor, it was unusual for him to have such a long phone conversation.

Only Alicia could provoke that kind of reaction from him.

What really caught Yolanda off guard was the fact that Alicia hadn't given her away.

Alicia seemed to know when to keep quiet and wait.

Yolanda smiled disdainfully.

She was going to make sure Alicia and Caden didn't have a future together.

Alicia was letting her best years slip away.

Meanwhile, Jeffery had been waiting in Caden's office for quite a while.

When Caden finally entered, Jeffery handed him the documents and got straight to the point.

“Mr Ward, we have discovered that prior to the Bennetts’ accident, Joshua flew overseas to meet them.

They had a heated argument and Joshua ended up in hospital afterwards.

” He paused, then added, “Reliable sources confirm that the fight was over their disapproval of his relationship with Ms Bennett.

The plane crash was not an accident.

We have gathered enough evidence to prove that it was man’s doing.

Once we hand him over to the authorities, Joshua will not escape justice this time.

Caden studied the documents carefully.

After a moment, he spoke quietly.

"Once this goes to court, the truth will be exposed to everyone.

"

Jeffery couldn't lose sight of his reaction.

"For someone like Joshua, public humiliation will be worse than jail.

" Wasn't that the perfect revenge? Jeffery noticed, though, that Caden seemed hesitant.

Caden put the documents aside.

“There is already enough evidence to put him away for life.

This won’t change anything.

Jeffery said: "But none of those charges compare to murder.

If you push it, he could face the death penalty.

"

Caden had already made his decision.

“A lifetime of suffering is a fate worse than death,” he said calmly.

“You can drop the case against the Bennett family.

Jeffery accepted the instructions, but one thought kept nagging at him.

"Have you softened, Mr.

Ward?"

Caden stared at him blankly.

Softness wasn't the problem.

He simply understood Alicia too well.

If she found out that her parents had been murdered, she would stop at nothing to kill Joshua herself.

He had lived through that kind of pain and knew that even revenge couldn't erase it.

There was no reason for Alicia to carry the same burden.

That night, when Caden entered the apartment, the rich aroma of food filled the air.

The smell was inviting of a well-prepared meal.

However, as he approached the dining table, his eyes scanned the dishes.

None of them looked like the ones he had ordered before.

He stood there for a moment, silently contemplating a meal that did not meet his expectations.

Alice entered the room, leaving the last plate on the table.

She washed her hands before noticing that he was still.

Looking at him, she asked, “Is something wrong?”

Caden’s expression was hard to read.

“Did you forget what I asked for, or did the supermarket completely run out of ingredients?”

Alice sat down at the table and replied: "I didn't feel like doing any of the things you mentioned.

"

“I see,” Caden replied, pulling his chair over and sitting down.

“So all that talk of an apology was just for show?”

Alice gave him a sidelong glance, unimpressed by his words.

“Are you going to eat or are you planning to sulk?” she asked, sounding slightly amused.

“If you’re not interested in dinner, why don’t you sit with Cade? Maybe he’ll share his food with you.

Caden stared at her and commented, “Look at you.

You look awfully proud of yourself.
