"Oh, Amara, don't be upset. I didn't mean it that way."

Kevin had never really cared about Amara's looks. To him, the most important qualities for the lady of the house were character, integrity, and work ethic qualities Amara had in spades. As for looks, what good were they anyway?

Finnian's father was always chasing after young and pretty women, never accomplishing anything meaningful. It seemed better not to bring someone too pretty into the family.

"Kevin, I know you didn't mean it that way, but that's just reality."

By "reality", she meant Finnian's lack of interest in her, something Kevin was well aware of. He sighed, offered a few words of comfort, and shuffled out with his cane.

Once he left, Amara felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her. Kevin was genuinely kind to her. A few years back, when her stepmother and stepsister caused a scene, he even shielded her from a flying vase. Without his intervention, the vase would land on her hand; who knew what might have happened next?

But Kevin was so stubborn, insisting she become Finnian's wife. What used to be her anchor to stay close to Finnian had now become a burden.

With a sudden bang, the door swung open. Amara thought Kevin had returned and turned her head, only to see Liliana strutting in, chin held high.

Amara stood up abruptly, displeasure laced in her voice. "Ms. Porter, what's your business barging in without knocking?"

Liliana flicked her hair back with a sneer. "I can't believe you had Mr. Kevin Everly drug Finn. You're so plain, yet you pull something like that? Have you no shame?"

Amara clenched her fists. "Were you eavesdropping on our conversation?"

"Ha, if you don't shut the door properly, don't complain about eavesdroppers."

"Where did you learn that twisted logic? By that reasoning, if you're attractive and someone rapes you, you deserve it?"

Liliana's expression faltered for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure. Her eyes roamed over Amara with disdain as she stated, "What's the point of what you said? You can't deny your ugliness, can you?

Don't tell me you think with your so-called good body plus the drug effect, men would fall for you? Let me tell you, it's not even close. You'd better look in a mirror, see how disgusting you are.

You're dreaming if you think a man will be interested just by watching you. Especially a man like Finn-he doesn't even want to touch you."

Her words were slow and deliberate, with every intention to insult. Amara was seething with anger, her fingers shivering, but quickly calmed herself.

At first, she was furious, wanting to shout that the drug wasn't her doing, that it was Kevin's idea. She hated being falsely accused. But then she realized Liliana didn't care about the truth. Liliana's goal was to humiliate her, to push her into divorcing Finnian.

So, she had to control her emotions, not let Liliana get to her. She might consider divorce, but only if Finnian wanted it. They were legally married-why should she listen to an outsider?

"Ms. Porter, what does my marriage to Finnian have to do with you? Does my appearance affect you in any way? If he ever does take a liking to me, what can you do about it? Besides, intervening us, who do you think you are?"
